On Church Membership

If someone joins a church as a member they are formally submitting to the authority of that church and agreeing to participate in that authority as well. In so doing they are inviting the leadership and the other members of that church to watch them; to guard their hearts. They are saying, “if you see me stray from the faith, tell me and I’ll do the same for you”.

Simeon’s Adoration of the King

Luke 2:25-35 – Simeon’s Adoration of Jesus Christ Simeon was a “righteous and devout” man who was in Jerusalem. We know he was both righteous and devout because  the scripture says plainly so. However, we also know he was righteous and devout because the text speaks of the Holy Spirit being “upon” him. It says…

Baptismal Identity

It’s an exciting time at Hillside Baptist Church right now. This year (2018) we’ve been introducing and planting seeds and cultivating three areas of our culture in which we believe God wants us to focus and grow. The Sex Talk

So there I was in our kitchen having just gotten home from work after a day riddled with email and issues to fix, when my loving wife communicated to me that our oldest son, whose 9, was starring at the cover of the latest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition. They’d stopped at a gas station to…

Joy to the World

So many things in this wonderful life bring us joy. Some things that bring me joy are hiking in massive and beautiful terrain, fishing on my kayak, meeting with my fellow elders every Monday morning before life starts, tickle fights with my two boys, and dates with my wife. The list could go on for…
